Decatur High School Lacrosse Prepares for the Big Game Tonight

For the first time in school history the Decatur High Boys Lacrosse Team has reached the semi-finals of the state lacrosse tournament.  Decatur (14-5) will play Pope (14-3-1) in the historical game tonight.   The game starts at 7:30pm at the Bulldog Stadium.  Admission is $7 per person.  Many of the young men have played  together since the youth program began at Decatur Active Living in 2003.   Decatur fans come out and support the team as they make history. Go Bulldogs!

Decatur Lacrosse Continues to Grow!

Who would have known 10 years ago (2002)  people would be so accepting of kids running around with sticks.  That would be lacrosse sticks. :-) .  As the Athletic Program Supervisor for Decatur Active Living it still amazes me today, that the sport many kids in Decatur had never seen or heard of, has become on of our biggest programs that we offer. From starting with two teams in the 10-11 division (no girls team) and now having a total of 12 teams (8 boys teams and 4 girls teams)  ranging from first graders to 8th graders is just one of the stories I like to ”brag” about.   The league currently uses Ebster, Renfroe and the Boys and Girls Club fields for games.  Practices fields are local fields in the City of Decatur.  League games are typically played on Saturdays and Sundays and Practices are held Monday-Thursday. Decatur is one of the only teams located within the perimeter.  Teams are often finding themselves traveling to Roswell, Forsyth, Alpharetta and Peachtree City for away games.  The fun and the excitement of the game, league and season helps to take your mind off the travel time.

Not only does Decatur Active Living offer League Lacrosse  in the Spring, but we offer a Summer Lacrosse Camp (Bulldog Lacrosse) a Fall Clinic and Lil’ Lax (for kids 3-5).

A New POD at the Boys & Girls Club

Decatur Active Living sends thanks  to Karl Wohlers of PODs for our new POD and to the Decatur Book Festival. Karl worked with Daren Wang and Mary Flad to have a POD at the Book Festival that looked like it had library shelves inside. It was a big hit as folks were encouraged to write titles on the imaginary book spines. They offered to donate a POD to Active Living to use as storage on one of our athletic fields. The POD was delivered today to the Boys & Girls Club field. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

The delivery of the POD was quite interesting to watch – it ”floated” while the truck was moved from underneath it.

Athletic Staff poses with Ben the driver, Mary Flad and the new POD.

Decatur Active Living offers soccer for children age 4 through 15 years old in the Spring and Fall of each year. Mr. Padgett and Superior Chevrolet were also sponsors of the 2011 Youth Baseball Program.

Healthy Monday: There’s More to Fit than Fat

Just because a food is branded as “low-fat” or “fat free” does not necessarily mean it’s a healthy choice.  Check food labels to make sure fat hasn’t been replaced by unnecessary sugar, calories and artifiical flavorings.  When in doubt, opt for whole foods instead.
